Ben was contacted by the lovely people over at Barber Shop Bags just prior to the Photography Show telling him about a new line of products there were releasing at the show. We downloaded the images they sent over to have a look at the products and were both instantly smitten with their design, materials and eye for detail.
Being a long time Holdfast users, sometimes its hard to go away from something you love. We held onto our opinions until we went to the Photography show to look at their products in person. We both fell in love with the idea of having something which was not only practical, but wasn’t screaming at you it was necessarily a Photography bag, or photography equipment.
We were both very impressed and our instant smitten with their products wasn’t wrong. The branding of the product is lovely, every small detail has been thought about and been labelled. There were a variety of different products on display, from all types of bags to wallets for CF/SD cards and single and multiple camera straps.
Ben delved straight in and got to trying on the camera straps. Using the Holdfast MoneyMaker now for a while, we wanted to really compare the build quality, design and feel to it. This is the strap Ben tried on:
We were certainly very impressed. It was very very well made and had tiny little additions to it which you can tell have been meticulously thought about. Take, for example, the additional leather that surrounds the clasp which attaches to the camera. The main strap is also a flexible and very strong material, we think this is advantageous over the complete leather, the reason being, Ben, ‘sometimes’, works hard shooting weddings and can perspire, a little shall we say, this can lead to the leather on the MoneyMaker staining shirts, giving a distinct ‘X’ on the back.
(Matthew over at Holdfast has confirmed that it is only the Water Buffalo version that stains (the one I have), just wanted to confirm this.)
We are hoping Barber Shop Bags will be sending some stuff over for review at Weddings on the go at some point, so will do a more in-depth review if/when that happens.
While at the show we couldn’t resist in purchasing one of their Bags; again being a Holdfast users we have the Roamographer as a main kit bag and wanted something to accent it with a small kit bag of lighting. We were after something that was small and practical, and have been looking around for a while. We fell in love with the detailing of the Barber Shop Bags, everything has been thought about and done really tastefully. They didnt settle making just fine Italian Leather bags, they also make a range of fully waterproof material bags, which is the one we went for. Our idea was to use this bag as a ‘lighting kit’ bag, but can see it having potential for a small kit bag when out with the family and a DSLR with a couple of Lenses, an events bag, it will take unto 13” laptop. Having only purchased this at the show we’ve yet to give it the once over being used, but can see we are going to love it. We got the bag into the studio for some shots:
Barber Shop do some hand straps in leather; again we couldn’t resist. The leather is beautiful, soft, flexible, smooth and durable, you really can’t go wrong. We got back, after the show, and got this on a camera body, the strap compliments the body lovely and is really comfortable. It has a screw thread attachment to the bottom of the camera and fits just fine with a battery grip to. This then wraps around the side over your hand across the grip. It is a little fiddly to attach and isn’t designed to be put on and off. We’ve found it comfortable but again will have to do a more in-depth review once we’ve managed to use it for a little while.
