My favourite lens…the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art Lens.
I was doing a model shoot recently and found my favourite lens to not be working as it should, which isn’t the most conventional way to start a review, but feel its good to air that the Sigma 50mm Art lens is still my favourite even after having to get its autofocus motor replaced.
This lens is quite big when it comes to a prime 50mm lens; it is 85mm diameter by 100mm in length weighing 815g; that said, it isn’t bad on camera, being a tad smaller than something like the 24-70 f/2.8 Canon L. The Sigma is for full frame and I use it on the Canon 5Dmk3. It has a 77mm thread filter, which is quite nice when it comes to other filters you may have for your current lenses. I think the overall look of the ‘A’ art lenses is great, a nice mix of matte and gloss black with white touches for writing and the locating dot for mounting on the body. The lens is made for Canon EF, Nikon F, Sigma SA, Sony Alpha fitments. The below two shots was taken with the Westcott Ice Light, a review coming soon.
So why is this my favourite? Simply put, its sharp, really nice and sharp, through f/1.4, with a good sweet spot at f/2.8. I find this great when it comes to being creative with shots, the extra stops of light at f/1.4 helps a lot when it comes to Weddings.
The above shot was at our model shoot using a couple of Speedlights and the amazing Profoto B1. We went for a bridal theme and used the veil over the lens leading back to the model. This created a wonderful softbox effect, linked with the beauty of the Sigma we got this type of shot.
When I first got the lens I took it out in the garden finding my cat as a nice model to play with, the below shows the overall shot and a 100% crop (by means of screen grab) of how sharp the lens is:
I purchased the Sigma on the day of release, keeping my fingers crossed that it was going to be as good as the reviews; I wasn’t disappointed. I got the lens from Clifton Cameras and can say they were brilliant, excellent customer service with getting the lens to me on a next day delivery due to an upcoming shoot. They were fantastic when it came to having to send it back to them to get the autofocus motor looked at and replaced by Sigma – http://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/Sigma_50mm_f1.4_DG_HSM_ART_Lens
As an overall rating for me, 5 out of 5, it is my go to lens for many shoots and now have the difficult decision as to whether I should be looking at Sigmas new 24mm f/1.4 Art Lens…
N.B. I have no affiliation or commission from Clifton Cameras, just impressed with their customer service.
